The Beach

We went to the beach (Padre Island, TX) for a long weekend vacation with my family and I took one blurry photo. The humidity fogged my lens everytime I brought my camera out - which, to be honest, was only once. It was one of those vacations that just could not translate to pictures - and I wasn't really feeling the desire to capture it on film. So I'll give you some highs (+) and lows (-) of the trip.
+ Playing in the ocean, boogie-boarding to be specific, with Jeremy for 4+ hours a day
- The snot and tears that come at a rapid rate when playing in the ocean for 4+ hours a day. Not sexy.
+ Beach hair.
- Attempting to camp on the beach - it turned out to be too windy. We had sand in our eyeballs, up our noses and in our ears after 5 minutes.
+ Slumber party in the condo my family had rented.
+ Building an avant garde sand castle with Jeremy and my nephew.
+ Watching The Dark Crystal on a huge palette with my family. Watching a 2 year old imitate a Skeksis is pure entertainment.
+ Sharing raw oysters with Jeremy and my dad.
+ Witnessing both my 6 and 2 year old nephews talk in their sleep. It's hereditary.
+ Roasting marshmallows around a beach fire
+ Watching kite surfers effortlessly ride the waves - I HAVE to try that.
- The sand is to the ocean what hair is to cats. It's EVERYWHERE and impossible to escape.
- The seaweed. There was a TON of it.
+ Jeremy found a sand dollar!
+ Texas beer. Fat Tire to be specific.
+ Avoiding sun burns but getting just enough of a tan line to make summer official.
+ Coming home.
While this was a much needed vacation there's nothing quite like coming home.

The only place I've ever found a whole sand dollar was on that exact beach! It's also the only place that I've sat around a beach fire and drank Fat Tire. That makes me really miss Mustang Island.
I definitely want to go back to do a proper camping trip when it's not so windy. My sister has gone to that beach the last few years and said the wind and seaweed were completely abnormal...
My father could never remember that it was called Fat Tire -- probably because he rarely drank. My sister used to drink that beer, and when he'd be out with her he'd make it a point to order one. You know, a FLAT Tire.

p.s. I tried kite surfing a few times -- hard, but fun. But hard.
Kelly - It was on my list to ask you about kite surfing when I got back because I just KNEW you had to have tried it before. Those dudes made it look so easy...
Pesky sand, it gets everywhere!
Hurrah for The Dark Crystal (I hear a sequel may happen) as well as mini vacation!
I found a whole sand dollar on that beach too!! No kidding. It's been sitting on my shelf for years because I can't figure out what to do with it.
Isn't Fat Tire a Colorado beer?
Erica - you are right! I always associate it with Texas, though, because we can't get it here in Oklahoma with our liquor laws. So yes, CO beer in TX.
I.hate.sand.
Everything else sounds great though!
mmm- fat tire!
Sounds like a great trip! Thought you might like this:
